A lumber tug pulls a raft of logs to a lumber mill. This was a very common sight on the Willamette river until about the late nineteen eighties.

Steamship receiving bulk grain at Municipal Terminal No. 4. The paddle wheel tug "Portland" (now the Maritime Museum) guides a steamship on the Willamette. A steamship with a cargo of lumber steams under the Saint Johns Bridge. The Portland Merchant's Exchange outpost on Kelly Point. A spotter would telephone the exchange with information on the arrival of ships. At night the spotter would use a loud speaker to communicate with the vessel. "What ship? What ship?"
